iGaming Terms Explained in Plain English

Starting a casino or sportsbook means running into a lot of new words. Most of them are simpler than they sound. Here's a plain-English list of the terms you'll see most, with no jargon. Keep it handy.

The platform words

White label: A ready-made casino or sportsbook you run under your own brand. The tech is built for you; you add your name and go live fast.

Turnkey: A full platform you own and run yourself, usually with your own licence. More control, but it costs more and takes longer.

iGaming: Online gambling as a business: casino, sportsbook, and the tech behind them.

Back office: The admin dashboard where you manage players, money, games, and reports.

The money words

GGR (Gross Gaming Revenue): The money you keep from bets. It's total bets minus what you pay out in wins.

NGR (Net Gaming Revenue): Your GGR after costs like bonuses and provider fees are taken out.

Settlement: Working out who is owed what, and paying it out.

The player and safety words

KYC (Know Your Customer): Checking a player really is who they say they are, usually with an ID.

AML (Anti-Money-Laundering): The checks that stop dirty money from moving through your site.

RTP (Return to Player): The share of bets a game pays back to players over time, like 96%.

The sportsbook and agent words

Sportsbook: The betting side of your site, where players bet on sports.

Pay per head (PPH): Bookie software you pay for based on the number of active players, instead of a big upfront cost.

Agent system: Tools to bring on agents and track the players each one brings in.

The payment words

Payment gateway: The service that lets players put money in and take money out.

USDT: A crypto coin tied to the US dollar, often used for deposits and payouts.

Why plain words matter

If a provider can't explain these terms simply, that's a small warning sign. The business isn't as complicated as the jargon makes it sound, and a good partner will keep it plain for you.
